1>  Introduction
This document was created in order to familiarize newcomers with the purpose, guidelines, and etiquette pertaining to Usenet's  alt.binaries.screen-savers newsgroup. Although the following is generally true for all  newsgroups found within the "alt" division of Usenet, it has been made for alt.binaries.screen-savers. Throughout this document we will be making some references and recommendations concerning various software applications that are necessary and/or useful when processing Usenet messages and attachments. Please realize that such references do not constitute product endorsements, nor should they be construed as indirectly undermining the worth of programs not mentioned herein.

So what is a screen saver? Originally a utility to help extend the life of a monitor by preventing "image burning" on the display resulting from periods of inactivity with a static, non moving, display. By displaying a moving image, or blanking out the screen, after a period of idleness or no activity, the monitor would not be damaged.  Modern monitors don't suffer from the short comings of their early brothers and can handle long periods of a static display or have self fixing for burin built into them.

So...why do we still use them?  Why? Well for a lot of us it started out as "what was a cool thing to have" which then turned into a collection of dozen and hundreds of them. Some people in the group have an extensive libraries and are more than eager to share, help, talk, about how to create, make and get them.

3>  ON TOPIC Utilities / Post Descriptions
Screen Savers / Utilities - When posting, use the subject [POST: Utility: and the name of it here]. These are programs that work out side of the normal screensaver control systems that are built into your operating system. Such programs, for example, randomize your screensavers for display, etc.

Adult Content Screensavers/etc. - When posting, use the subject [POST: Warning Nudity: and the name of it here]. These are Nude and or Sexual in content Screensavers/Wallpaper/Shutdown or Startup pictures. And as long as you put the disclaimer in the Header Post it will be considered ON-TOPIC.

Adware/Spyware Screensavers, Themes, Utilities, etc. - NOTICE: though the group frowns upon posting adware/spyware supported apps you may do so IF: THE POST IS CLEARLY MARKED in both the zero file and the post subject header. When posting, use the subject [POST: Adware/Spyware: and the name of it here].  Also the poster should be 100% upfront and prepared to answer questions in regards to what level the adware/spyware impacts the end user.  There is a limit to post any one item as to be no more than Once A MONTH. And as long as you follow these set guidelines those postings will be considered ON-TOPIC.

Commercial for profit ON-TOPIC postings - When a Website, Individual or Commercial for profit  posts promoting there screensaver/site/utilities they should use the subject [Commercial Post: and the name of it here]
There is a limit to post such items as to be no more than TWICE A MONTH. And as long as you follow these set guidelines those postings will be considered ON-TOPIC.   *NOTE:
This also can be said for individuals trying to promote there site(s). Even though they maybe NOT receiving any monetary compensation they should follow the same guidelines as set above.

Wallpaper Utilities - When posting, use the subject [POST: Wallpaper and the name of it here]. Wallpapers are images that are displayed as backgrounds on your "desktop" or display. They can be of any type, however the .bmp format can grow in file size to be quite huge. So it is recommended to compress the wallpapers before posting them, although Zip is good, it doesn't achieve the compression that .jpg can do. Wallpaper files must be in the windows folder to be used by the wallpaper control.

Desktop Themes - When posting, use the subject [POST: Theme and the name of it here]. Themes are a collect of icons, SoundBits, settings, wallpapers, and screensavers that are packaged in a format that is used by an external program (MS Plus, Desktop Themes) that pre-arranges all of the above items into a new desktop setting. If you post a theme put the contents of the theme in the subject.

Desktop Toys - When posting, use the subject [POST: Desktop Toy: and the name of it here]. This is the common term to describe the following; Desktop screen mates and/or Toys, pointer chasers, window sitters, clocks, etc.

Joke Utilities - When posting, use the subject [POST: Joke Toy: and the name of it here]. Any kind of humor Application, or Joke utilities, including small joke Avi's.

Programming Utilities - When posting, use the subject [POST: Utility: and the name of it here] . This are programs that are used to make the above on topic things. the most commonly posted and requested are Screen Saver Makers or the engines used to make a screensaver.

4>  What's this weird file I Downloaded
The Screensaver files that are posted to these newsgroups are all Encoded files, and are therefore NOT useable by your computer until they are DEcoded. Encoding is a method whereby a "binary" computer file is converted completely into plain text (ASCII) and is thereby made suitable for posting to, and downloaded from, Usenet newsgroups. Realize that Usenet is a computer system that ONLY handles text, nothing else. It's this condition which makes text encoding necessary. The two most common methods of encoding are the UUE format and the MIME format. It's not important for you to know the specifics about these methods, but you will need a program that's capable of DEcoding these files. When you view a UUEncoded or MIME encoded file in your newsreader or in a text editor, you will see the equivalent of a tossed alphabet salad garnished with punctuation characters.

NOTE: Microsoft Outlook Express users only ** How to combine multipart news messages **
When a large message (one that contains pictures, or other large objects) is posted to a newsgroup, it is broken into smaller files and displayed as several multipart messages. You can recombine the messages to recreate the original message and display it in Outlook Express. Select ALL of the messages that are part of the original message (example: 1/3, 2/3, 3/3). On the Tools menu, (or right click on ALL the selected messages) click Combine and Decode. The message will continue to be displayed in the newsgroup as several messages. To save the recombined message, click the File menu | Save As.

7>  Questions on Posting the Files I have
What should I put in the subject header of my post? - If you're filling a request, then include the requestor's name in the subject, preceded with an "ATTN:" to help that person locate the post.   If you have done anything that would be considered unconventional, than you should include that in the subject header. Also, please be aware of the length of your subject headers and try to keep them under 70 characters.  And keep in mind that some newsreader software adds the name of the file to the subject line, so don't fill the header with extra info that might push the name subject off of the screen.

How often can I repost a file I have just posted? - You should not post a file for a period of 7days after the last post. If you have just posted a file and it does not show up right away,  it may take as long as 24 hours for it to propagate on the server that you have just posted too. So the keyword here is... "patience". But what if someone posts a request for you to post it again? Post a follow-up explaining that they will have to wait for the 7 day period.

Can I post Screensavers, Themes, etc. I find on other websites? - Yes you can, but It would be a good Idea to give credit to the creator and or website you got it from. Try putting a link to it in you 0 file when posting. Also a good description of the file would be useful for others to see as they might not want to download the file before knowing exactly what it is.

What about the zero-file (0/x) - The zero-file should contain ANY and ALL pertinent information about the post.  You should include information about how the files were created.  You might also want to mention other files you could post, and any requests that you might have.  In the zero-file, the more information you give, the better.

Some of my files aren't appearing on some other news servers.  Why is that? - There are a number of things that could cause this. You best bet is to wait 24 hours before posting the file again to be sure that it did not post properly. Short of getting a new ISP, or complaining to your present ISP about poor propagation, you can't do anything about most of the problems from non-propagating posts other than subscribe to one of the Pay Newservers that are available.

How many lines per segment should I use when I post? - In Agent set your segment size to about 7900 lines, or around 1/2 Meg.  This is done by going to Group|Default Properties|Send Files and putting 500000 lines in the "Maximum bytes per section" box.

Should I zip (arj, rar, jar, gzip etc) my files before uploading? - In general, Yes.  Compression is pretty useful for a .SCR because they're not compressed.  Remember that on occasions some people will break their files into distinct sections using one of the Other formats.

What are the "test" groups and who should use them? - You should use them if you're new to binary posting or are using a newsreader that you are unfamiliar with.  The test groups (alt.test and alt.binaries.test) are intended for posting tests without disrupting the normal activity in other newsgroups. They are there so you can work out the problems of posting *before* you do it in   A.B.S-S. Everybody makes mistakes, wouldn't you rather do it in a test group?

9>  How do I use a File that has a .ZIP Extension
Once your downloaded file is decoded from it's text formatting, it still won't be ready to use. Most Screensavers are distributed as a data-compressed package known as an archive file. The process of archiving brings two significant changes;

1.) Compacts file data and thereby reduces the total disk space (total bytes) required to store the files.
2.) Unites many files (up to thousands) into one single easily handled file.

The tradeoff for this disk space reduction is that the files are NOT useable in a compressed state. Before you can use the file(s) that are packaged within an archive, you will need to DECOMPRESS them. Decompression is a process that restores the compressed file(s) to their original size and state, and renders them useable again. There are many different types of compressed archives, each based on a different computer algorithm.

If you don't already have a program that handles (compresses and decompresses) ZIP archives, there are many excellent Windows based programs to choose from. Regardless of which shareware site you routinely visit, it should have a category that deals with "compression" or "archiving". This is where you will find programs that handle ZIP files as well as many other archive formats. Probably the most popular Windows based archiving tool is WinZip, which is a thoroughly tested and "user-friendly" program that offers different wizards for walking you step by step through various archiving chores. WinPack Deluxe is another solid choice that handles even more archive types, allows conversion between types, and adds batch processing. If you'd rather work from the command line, use either PKZip or InfoZip.

Besides the more popular "ZIP" compression utilities there are several other files formats (arj, arc, zoo, tar, ace, lha, cab, lhz, rar, tar) that have come to be more reliable and have better suited the more heavy duty internet user. While these formats may not be in the compression forefront do not take them lightly. They have some of the best features of ANY other compression utilities on the web. The most popular other format is RAR with it's recovery & archive capabilities, stands out so far as the winner.

12>  What exactly is Shareware
Shareware refers to software programs that are for sale to the general public on a "Try Before You Buy" basis. This is in contrast to software programs that are commercially available as shrink-wrapped removable media (floppy disks, CDs, etc) on the well known "Buy Before You Try and If You Aren't Satisfied go scratch" basis. How does it work? Well, let's suppose a non-incorporated part-time computer programmer writes a computer program in his spare time and decides to market it for profit. In order to get the program onto the shelves of the local computer stores, they would need to come up with at least a few thousand dollars so he could pay some graphics designer to create a snazzy box, hire a lawyer to deal with patents, copyrights, contracts, etc, obtain the necessary internet access, subcontract a company to process the orders, and so on.

14>  What about Serial Numbers / Cracks / Key Generators
Serial Numbers - In general they are ok to post, and are often the preferred method for unlocking a program since they unlock the program in accordance with the original computer code. Serial numbers are therefore (theoretically) 100% effective and don't introduce the possibility of creating "bugs" in the program's functioning. Serial numbers often remain effective over several versions of a program. However, be aware that some authors release rogue serial numbers which may (at the least) make the program not work or (the worst) format your c drive :-(  See the section Some simple steps to Security for some tips and advise.

Cracks - If at all possible don't post (a lot) of cracks here. The quickest way to kill this group for everyone will be to fill it up with cracks and bring it to the attention to system admin's all over the world. If anyone wants a crack all one has to do is go to alt.binaries.cracks and look for it. It was generally agreed that we would keep posts here on topic to the subject of savers and themes. The increased traffic (if we were to post to many cracks) would come to the attention of providers looking to save money and see what they can cut back on. If a lot show up here some providers will stop carrying the group.

Key Generators - Since these fall into the "serial number" section  they ARE OK to post as long as you follow the guidelines set there.

15>  Why do so many People use Fake E-mail addresses
In large part this is done in order to remain more or less anonymous. The e-mail address posted in your messages can be virtually anything you like as long as it has a "@" character in it. Servers aren't picky about this. You can change this address by configuring your newsreader via it's "Options", "Preferences", or "Configuration" menu items. Wherever your newsreader asks for an e-mail address, you can use a fake one (except of course when filling in User Validation and Password information that may be required to gain access to your news server). By using a fake e-mail address you will prevent others in the newsgroup from sending you unwanted e-mail or distributing your e-mail address to spammers. But remember that this does NOT make you untraceable. Your news server logs each and every post and stamps it with an ID number so that any single post can be traced right back to you. Typically, your news server keeps this information confidential but will not hesitate to release information when it involves abuse or misuse of the account. About the only situation that will prompt another person to pursue this information is when you do something really stupid or rude (like posting a virus, repeated spamming)

<Top Index>

16>  What is Spam
Spam is bad. Whether it comes to you via e-mail, in these groups, or in a can it's always distasteful. Although "Spamming" may be appropriate in the kitchen, it's a sin in any newsgroup and it constitutes legal grounds upon which your ISP account may be terminated.

Spamming is the indiscriminate posting of messages to many newsgroups and/or e-mail addresses, regardless of the appropriateness or relevance of the message to those groups or persons. This tactic is used often by individuals pushing "get-rich" schemes or fly-by-night memberships to some Internet related "club". Then there's the pathetic lot who have nothing better to do than try to get a rise out of as many people as possible. This usually takes the form of some inflammatory statement concerning race, sex, religion, or anything else that might cause a lot of people to respond (referred to as trolling). These individuals are always aware of their crime and take precautions against being easily traced.

Terms when discussing "inappropriate" postings
Kill Filter A  newsreader feature that allows the user to automatically "tag" specific messages by either, E-mail address and/or | Content of subject line and/or | Message ID, and then be able to delete those messages immediately.
Plonk The act of placing a specific poster into one's kill-filter list, as so not to see his posts.
Off-Topic Sending messages or files to the A.B.S-S newsgroup that doesn't concern itself with Screensavers or there considered ON TOPIC subjects is considered OFF TOPIC

17>  Why Isn't anybody answering my Requests
You've done everything exactly as outlined here in this document and are still not getting the screensaver that you requested?  Then try   contacting one of the REGULAR posters via ICQ. If you don't have or don't know what ICQ is, then go HERE to download or check out there homepage at http://www.icq.com/ to read more about it. Pretty much all the regulars have their ICQ# on the signatures of their posts. If you don't not get an immediate response (sorry were not online all the time) we'll get back to you.

<Top Index>

18>  What about Viruses
I'm glad you asked! If you aren't a little paranoid about computer viruses, then you probably need to read about some of the more "lethal" ones. While most viruses tend to be rather benign in terms of their ability to cause irreversible damage to your data, there are many that possess the ability to pretty much trash everything on your hard drive in a very short time. Hundreds of new viruses enter the Internet every month, so even the most current antivirus software does not protect you fully. However, there are some steps you can take to significantly decrease your likelihood of acquiring one of these little beasts.

First of all, you need to install some antivirus programs on your system. Most experts in the field of computer virology recommend using at least two different programs concomitantly, with one of them being capable of heuristic scanning. Heuristics is a method of scanning that does not depend on matching the code of a known virus. This method searches for nonspecific but suspicious looking code. It is therefore more sensitive and leads to many more "false" positive alarms (meaning that the program detects and reports a virus when in reality there is none). Popular programs capable of such heuristic scanning include Thunderbyte Antivirus, Dr. Solomon's Antiviral Toolkit, and Norton Antivirus (among others). Other excellent overall scanners include McAfee's VirusScan, and the always-up-to-date AntiViral Toolkit (AVP). These programs may be obtained from most large shareware distribution sites or their respective websites.

20>  How to Report a Suspected Virus

False positive reports of viral infections are common and can give rise to a great deal of needless and wasted time when details are not considered and clearly stated. Always include the following items in a posted report concerning any suspicious files. You will probably not be able to trace all of this info, but do your best.

  • Verify any alerts with at least one other good antiviral scanner.
  • Specify whether your scanner was utilizing heuristics and what level.
  • Specify which scanners you used.
  • Specify the exact file size (in bytes) of the possibly infected file.
  • Specify where and when you downloaded the possibly infected file and who posted it.
  • Specify whether you executed the file, and if so, what affects it had on your system.
  • And of course, specify the exact identity of the virus and the EXACT message.

Then post your finding to the group similar to this example: [WARNING: ot ATTN: Virus or Trojan]
then included the file name that is infected, the author of the post, and a report from your scanner and any of the above information. As it will be helpful in determining what if any virus are present. Also do not flame the poster of the infected file, the regulars will do what is needed from there.

** Simple Security Steps **

Download files ONLY from sources you trust.
As a general rule, look for files posted by stable members of the group. By "stable" I am not referring to the mental states of the people in the group. I am referring to a person's presence in the group. How long has this person been active in the group?  Are they helpful to others? Do they post files on a regular basis?

Never download a file that claims to do something amazing.

Such as a "code generator" for porno sites, or anything else that just seem too good to be true.

Change the name of (or move) those files that Trojans frequently utilize.
Most Trojans that have been posted to newsgroups have been the type which issue commands to system files that already exist on your computer. The files most often hijacked are FDISK.EXE , FORMAT.EXE, ATTRIB.EXE, and DELTREE.EXE. Since all of these are invariably located right where they were installed, a Trojan is capable of utilizing these programs without even knowing where they are on your computer. The simplest solution? Just rename them or move them out of your path. Puzzled? Then just ask one of the regulars in the group to help you on this subject.

22>  How do I make a Screensaver
A screensaver is a straightforward executable that has been renamed with the extension .scr which responds to particular command-line arguments in a certain way. All modern compilers do this automatically through an option labeled 'target subsystem' or similar.  Windows NT does all saver password management itself, and closes savers automatically in response to keyboard or mouse events. Interactive savers need special precautions to prevent NT from doing this. Under '95 and Plus! the saver must do all the password management itself.   OK.....Now your saying to yourself this is all good but "How do I make a screensaver?" Well what were getting at it is not that easy. Unless you use as "Creator" type of program with a GUI interface that does all the appropriate coding for you. To get started from scratch you will need to know one of the many Programming languages out there, and even after learning those it isn't still is not that easy. You have been warned.

Visual Basic:
VB is a high level interpreted language, very easy to learn. Published by Microsoft.
Delphi: Delphi: is also a high level language, almost as easy to learn as Visual Basic. Comes with a true compiler to produce faster executables. But it really depends on what you are trying to write.
C/C++: Very cryptic, and a little hard to understand, but creates very fast executables. It would also be very hard to learn without any prior programming experience.
Borland C++ Builder: By far one of (if not) the best that there is. Not to be overlooked.

An excellent place to start learning how to create screensavers is here. You can also search the web for some help with creating them. Hope to see your creations in the group! GOOD LUCK!

<Top Index>

23>  Screensaver Programs
There are a lot of screensaver creator programs out there and most if not all are not that very good, but there is a reason for that. It is because the applications themselves are limited in the amount of parameters /effects that can be done with them. Remember you must be able to input effects in a GUI interface that the author has created without having the knowledge of knowing a programming language.

Now while we cannot recommend any ONE program, but we can name a few of the best that are available for at a nominal fee.
